Demon Duck of Doom

Dromornis murrayi (‘Demon Duck of Doom’) Australian megafauna reconstruction

Nicknamed the ‘Demon Duck of Doom’, the Dromornis murrayi is an extinct flightless bird that lived in Australia around 50,000 years ago. This eye-catching sculpture draws attention to the features of these giant birds and is part of the Natureworks Megafauna Collection.

The Dromornis murrayi sculpture is available in two versions, both 2m high. One is looking left (Code: NW.DMLeft) and the other is looking right (Code: NW.DMRight). We created them to promote Riversleigh Fossil Discovery Centre (see project info and pics here).

‘Demon Duck of Doom’ – Dromornis Murrayi  Statue

Say “Hello” to these giant Thunderbirds as they greet you outside the Riversleigh Fossil Discovery Centre in Mt Isa. They certainly draw attention from passers-by! Read about the project here.

As part of the revitalisation of outback tourism infrastructure, Natureworks was commissioned to create these “Demon ducks of doom”. They’re an educational exhibit to help visitors understand the size of the largest Australian flightless birds ever to evolve.

These life-size recreations of four dromornithids create a colourful display of what these birds would have looked like 50 thousand years ago. They lived in the Riversleigh area and were studied by researchers in 2021.

This Demon Duck of Doom is available in two versions – looking left and looking right. The head is slightly turned to allow it to be positioned correctly in your display.
