Megafauna Turkey – Giant
Latagallina naracoortensis
Life size reproduction of Megafauna Turkey
This giant flying turkey is one of a number of extinct large megapode birds recently discovered by researchers at Flinders University.
Key Points of the Megafauna Turkey
- It was probably still present upon the arrival of the first humans in Australia, about $50,000 years ago
- It was first described in 1888 by the naturalist Charles de Vis
- Most of the fossil remains have been found in Naracoorte Caves, but a number have been found in other fossil sites throughout Australia
- Australia once home to five large megapodes, relatives of the brush turkey
- Fossils suggest Australia was once home to five species of now-extinct giant megapode – Chunky, chiken-esque cousns of modern mound-building brush turkeys and malleefow.
- The largest of these extinct birds weighed 8 kilograms and was about four times the size of today’s brush turkey
- Fossil remains found around 50,000 years ago and may have co-existed with indigenous Australians that arrived on the continent
- Dr David Booth, a senior lecturer from the University of Queensland said there had previously been a theory suggesting giant extinct megapodes shrunk down, giving rise to the birds we know today.
