Natureworks’ contribution to the outstandingly successful EXPO 88 in Brisbane included the refreshing rainforest displays in the Queensland pavilion (which won the prize of Best Pavilion), the imposing rock features of the well-patronised New Zealand pavilion, and the edgings, waterfalls and rock features of the Pacific Lagoon area. These constructed natural environments of unsurpassed realism proved to be overwhelmingly popular.
Making artificial limestone caves
The artificial limestone caves we made for the NZ pavilion faithfully reproduced rock textures, colours and formations of stalactites and stalagmites.
Natureworks creates artificial caves and rocks using sprayed concrete, fibreglass, polystyrene foam or GFRC (Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete), depending on the location, duration and objectives of the display. For example, see the artificial rock wall we created out of polystyrene foam for a short-term pop-up experience, or the much more permanent steel and cement cave walls for Riversleigh World Heritage Centre.
