But why are gingerbread cookies popularly made during the Yuletide season?
There are several versions of the origin of the Gingerbread Man and some date back to Medieval times. One historical account claims Queen Elizabeth I ordered cookies to be baked for some esteemed guests. She ordered her cooks to create them according to how her guests looked. Apparently, they appreciated the gesture so much that it grew in popularity and gave birth to “gingerbread fairs” around England and Europe.
Aside from the fairs, ladies also gave them as good luck charms for knights they fancied. While another folk tale had women eating Gingerbread Man cookies to increase their chances of marrying.
One story may explain Gingerbread cookies’ association to Christmas however, these cookies were said to be sacred and too special to be baked on any normal occasion that the general public was only allowed to make them during Christmas and Easter.
