St. Nick may be the icon of gift-giving for Christmas but the origins of the story actually go way back to when Jesus was born. According to the story, Wise Men visited the manger where Jesus, Mary, and Joseph temporarily resided and offered gifts to the newborn King: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Then, the poem “A Visit From St. Nick” further cemented the gift-giving tradition during the Yuletide season. Giving someone a gift became a representation of how individuals value their loved ones during the Christmas season.
