The significance of the number on the Mad Hatter’s hat is rooted in the whimsical and nonsensical nature of Wonderland. In Lewis Carroll’s original story, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” the Mad Hatter poses the famous riddle: “Why is a raven like a writing desk?” When Alice asks for the answer, the Mad Hatter admits that he doesn’t know. He explains that the number on his hat (10/6) is an indication that it costs “ten shillings and sixpence” to purchase a hat, but it has no relation to the riddle itself.

The number “10/6” has since become a recognizable symbol associated with the Mad Hatter character. It adds to the whimsy and mystery surrounding the character, emphasizing his unconventional and unpredictable nature.
