In Lewis Carroll’s original story, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” the Mad Hatter poses the famous riddle: “Why is a raven like a writing desk?” When Alice asks for the answer, the Mad Hatter admits that he doesn’t know. He explains that the number on his hat (10/6) is an indication that it costs “ten shillings and sixpence” to purchase a hat, but it has no relation to the riddle itself.
The number “10/6” has since become a recognizable symbol associated with the Mad Hatter character.
