Giant Red-bellied Black Snake sculpture – much larger than life-size! You can see how it was used to great effect in the nature playground at Huntington Rise, Qld.

Did you know…
Red-bellied Black Snakes are common on the east coast of Australia. They are quite shy and don’t usually bite unless molested. They will often freeze to avoid detection, and you may get quite close before realising the snake is there. If you approach the snake too closely it will usually try to flee, but if it can’t escape it will rear up, hiss loudly, and may make mock strikes with a closed mouth. Continual harassment may result in a bite, which can be painful.
However, the Red-Bellied Black Snake is not as dangerous as you may think. Very few human deaths have resulted from its bites (and for many of those recorded historically, the snake’s identity was unconfirmed). This beautiful snake shares our love of warmth and water, so look out for it on your outdoor adventures!
