Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus)
Platypuses (or platypodes) grow up to 60cm in length and are endemic to east and south-eastern Australia, including Tasmania. They are mostly nocturnal, sleeping in chambers at the end of riverbank burrows. Celebrated as one of Australia’s most unusual mammals, the platypus is one of only two monotremes in the world, along with the echidna, the only other egg-laying mammal that suckles its young.
Unique characteristics of the platypus include:
- Venomous spur: The male possesses a spur on the rear legs.
- Electro-reception: They use electro-reception to locate their prey, which includes invertebrates such as tadpoles, worms, snails, and shrimps.
- Duck-like bill: Their flexible bill feels like suede.
Prehistoric platypuses grew much larger, with fossil records showing individuals up to 1 metre in length.
Our platypus sculptures have been used at:
- Currumbin Sanctuary
- Rotary Park in Jimbooma Brisbane
- Ipswich Environmental Centre Display
