Legendary Mythological folklore
Garden gnomes have been represented in medieval mythological folklore stories for hundreds of years. and have become part of folklore stories. Traditionally dressed with pointy hats and bearded and originating as a decoration for the wealthy in Europe. They are now popular in gardens and lawns throughout the western world even though they are often regarded as kitsch, they do add a point of interest.
Protectors of the Earth
The traditional gnomes were said to be the nocturnal protectors of the Earth. They are closely linked to the mythology of the classical elements – Earth, fir, Water and Air. They stand proudly as keepers of your garden and are believed to protect the owner from evil and are known as symbols of good luck.
Gnomes pop culture
Disney’s animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs certainly added to their popularity and gave gnomes a reputation for having little individual personalities. Would you like seven giant dwarfs?
The travelling gnome was also popular throughout the world. This is a practice whereby people have stolen a garden gnome from a garden and then went travelling with the gnome and sent the owner photos of the gnome in various locations around the world as a practical joke before returning it. This running prank has made national news at times also visiting cinemas, pubs, bowling alley etc. As a spin-off of this prank a mobile app for Android and IOSs devices lets users attach clipart of virtual gnomes to their travel photographs that they can share with friends – Gnonstop Gnomes.
Did you know:
Did you ever wonder why gnomes have red hats? Fact or fiction?
The red hats are representative of common folk, blue hats are for officials, yellow hats are for leaders (such as a mayor) brown hats are for criminals and white hats are for Dunces. Size is also a quality to measure: the taller the hat the smarter and more accomplished the gnome wearing it is. – thanks to the Fandom page to enlightening us –there is entire world of gnomes out there – find out more by visiting this Fandom page – it makes some interesting reading!
These “little folk” whimsical statues – (though this one is giant) certainly have a unique presence and their own style, but what if you would you prefer a variation of colour? We can paint them any colour you like – just ask.
