Charles Darwin was a British naturalist who developed the theory of natural selection which states that new species grow through a process of evolution instead of having been unchangeably created by God. His journey on board HMS Beagle inadvertently contributed to his famous work which started with Darwin collecting fossils and samples of animals, rocks, and plants. This trip was originally meant for surveying South America’s coastline to improve maps of the area. Contrary to popular belief, it was not his visit to the Galapagos Islands that ultimately gave him a eureka moment for his theory.

As a young learner, he jumped from one university to another with much influence from his father who was a doctor until he became more drawn into natural history as opposed to medicine. After his life-changing journey, he was able to publish his findings on natural selection and evolution in his book entitled On the Origin of Species in 1859.
