It is said that when Santa Claus pays a visit to good little boys and girls on Christmas eve, he magically slides through the fireplace. He rides on his sleigh over trees and rooftops, then drops by a house and slides down the chimney to deliver a present.

This little tidbit was introduced by American writer Washington Irving in his work, “A History of New York,” and soon became part of St. Nick’s modern image.

Now, a fireplace has become an essential part of the jolly season. Stockings with the owners’ names printed on them are also pinned on fireplaces for Santa to stuff treats into. They’re usually filled with chocolates, candy canes, peppermint candies, or small toys.
