Interesting Facts About Ankylosaurus
Ankylosaurus of the Cretaceous era, 66 to 70 million years ago, was a four-legged armoured dinosaur often compared to an army tank or bus. The armoured top of the Ankylosaurus was known as osteoderms and scutes, made of massive knobs and oval plates of bones (bones that form within the skin, similar to crocodiles, armadillos and some lizards), supplemented by rows of bony spines.
Aside from a heavily armoured and spiked body and skull, what set aside Ankylosaurus from other dinosaurs is its well-known clubbed tail, its most defensive weapon that is capable of producing massive force to destroy its opponents. Indeed Ankylosaurus’ physical characteristics can help him to survive the vicious predators of the late Cretaceous era.
Did you know that in Greek, Ankylosaurus means “Fused Lizard”? The name was given to this type of dinosaur because its bones are fused, making its appearance rugged.
