Genyornis Newtoni Fossil Dig – (Large Flightless Bird)

Short poem about Genyornis Newtoni

Big Bird of Australia, flightless and grand,
Genyornis newtoni roamed this land.
Foraging for food, leaves and fruit,
A beak like a horse, it would use to loot.

A bird of great size, up to three meters tall,
Wings too small, it could not fly at all.
But it had powerful legs, and could run fast,
A sprinter of birds, it was unsurpassed.

The Genyornis lived long ago, in the Pleistocene age,
Its fossils tell us its story, on history’s page.
Though it’s now extinct, its legacy lives on,
In the fossils, we find, of this bird that’s gone.

How to create an educational and fun fossil dig activity:

Our Fossil Dig provides a ready-made discovery play experience for children. To enhance it further and create an educational and fun fossil dig activity, you can follow these steps:

  1. Research: Gather information about the Genyornis Newtoni, its physical characteristics, habitat, diet, and lifestyle. You can also find out where its fossils have been found and what they look like.
  2. Materials: Purchase or create materials for the fossil dig. You will need:
    • Plaster of Paris or another casting material
    • Small plastic or rubber Genyornis Newtoni skeletons or toys
    • A sandbox or large container filled with sand or dirt (or our fossil dig tray)
    • Brushes
    • Water
    • Plastic containers for mixing plaster
  3. Make the Fossils: Use the small plastic or rubber skeletons or toys to make moulds with the plaster of Paris. Follow the instructions on the package to mix the plaster and pour it into the moulds. Allow the plaster to dry completely.
  4. Set Up the Dig: Hide the plaster Genyornis Newtoni fossils in the sandbox or a large container filled with sand or dirt. Make sure to bury them at different depths and angles to make the dig more challenging.
  5. Start Digging: Give the children the brushes and water, and let them start digging! Encourage them to be gentle and use the brushes to remove the sand or dirt around the fossils. When they find a fossil, have them carefully brush away the remaining sand or dirt and remove the fossil from the sand.
  6. Identification: Once the fossils are uncovered, you can discuss with the children what they have found, what it might have looked like, and how it might have lived. You can also use pictures or diagrams to help identify the different parts of the Genyornis Newtoni.
