A dinosaur with fierce reputation & and bird like features!
Velociraptor Feathered dinosaur Sculpture
As we explore the fascinating world of dinosaurs, one species that captures our attention is the Velociraptor—known for both its fierce reputation and its intriguing bird-like features. Roaming the Earth around 75 million years ago, this creature was a captivating mix of a predatory dinosaur and what we recognize today in modern birds. Our finely detailed, hand-painted 3D life-size sculpture, the Feathered Velociraptor, brings this unique blend to life. While Velociraptors were flightless, their anatomy shares remarkable characteristics with avian species, reflecting the evolutionary ties between dinosaurs and birds.
Design process
Behind the scenes of our design process
The path to creating this museum-quality replica begins with an exploration of the Velociraptor’s evolutionary transition into something akin to a ferocious bird. The evidence lies in the fossils of bird-like creatures with unmistakably bird-like characteristics.
This is how we start the process to create a new sculpture…
Design Concepts and Development Process
In crafting our feathered velociraptor sculpture, we began with a comprehensive design phase to ensure accuracy, creativity, and functionality. Here’s a look into our process before we moved on to creating the clay prototype and the final full-scale sculpture.
Design Concepts:
- Initial Sketches and Illustrations –Our journey began with detailed sketches and digital illustrations to capture the velociraptor’s dynamic form and feathered texture. These concepts allowed us to visualize the sculpture’s proportions, stance, and intricate details.
- Feather Detailing –We meticulously planned the feather patterns, drawing inspiration from modern birds and fossil evidence. Our design aimed to reflect the velociraptor’s agile and predatory nature, ensuring that the feathers appeared natural and life-like.
- Size and Scale –We determined the optimal dimensions for the sculpture, balancing aesthetic impact with practical considerations. The final size was designed to be impressive yet manageable for display purposes.
- Tail Design –To facilitate easier transportation and installation, the tail of the velociraptor was designed to be removable. This practical feature ensures that the sculpture can be transported safely and assembled on-site with minimal effort.
From Concept to Creation:
- Plasticine Prototype – Using the approved design concepts, we crafted a detailed clay prototype. This stage allowed us to refine the textures, proportions, and overall appearance of the velociraptor before moving on to the final sculpture.
- Full-Scale Sculpture – With the prototype as our guide, we proceeded to create the full-scale sculpture. Every detail, from the feather texture to the dynamic pose, was carefully executed to bring the velociraptor to life.
Final Product Features:
- Removable Tail: The detachable tail feature ensures ease of transportation and assembly, making the sculpture versatile for various display settings.
- Feathered Realism: The intricate feather detailing highlights the connection between dinosaurs and modern birds, offering a glimpse into the ancient past.
This process reflects our commitment to combining artistic vision with practical design, resulting in a stunning and functional feathered velociraptor sculpture.
Other features that were considered when designing this sculpture
Characteristics considered :-
- A Long Snout: A beak-like snout reminiscent of modern birds, suggesting a dietary preference for smaller prey.
- Long Tail and Large Feet: The Velociraptor’s long tail and substantial feet, featuring three strongly curved claws, echo the wing bones of contemporary birds. These features were integral for grasping and holding prey.
- Wing-Like Arms: The most intriguing aspect is the presence of wing-like arms, accompanied by a wishbone akin to those found in modern birds. However, these early avian ancestors, including the Velociraptor, did not possess wings substantial enough to support flight.
- Feathers and Camouflage: Intriguingly, close relatives of the Velociraptor offer clues about its plumage. It is believed that Velociraptors boasted colourful feathers, possibly adorned with an iridescent camouflage pattern. While our knowledge of their exact colouration is speculative, their close kin indicate that they were anything but dull.
- Balanced Stance: To ensure display stability, the sculpture is expertly balanced on four points.
- Realistic Colouration: The intricate hand-painted details give life to the sculpture, capturing the earthy tones and colours that were likely present in the original creature.
- Striking Pose: In a dynamic, running pose with the back left leg lifted, this Velociraptor is ready to strike, showcasing its agility and predatory nature.
- Feathered Finery: The Velociraptor’s long claws, akin to a modern bird of prey, and its realistic gaze are a testament to the detailed sculpting process.
- Feathered Velociraptor features a detachable tail, ensuring ease of shipping and straightforward slot-together assembly. Various top coat finishes are available upon request, allowing you to customize the appearance of your Velociraptor to suit your specific requirements.
- Size Length 250cm x Width 76cm x Height 165cm – Approx 28kg
