Muttaburrasaurus langdoni dinosaur
In 1981, David Joffe sculpted the first full-size reproduction of the Muttaburrasaurus dinosaur for the Queensland town of Muttaburra. The Muttaburrasaurus langdoni was one of the most complete dinosaurs discovered in Australia and comes from early Cretaceous marine deposits in central QLD. It was found near Muttaburra, 100 km northeast of Longreach.
Since then, David’s company, Natureworks, has produced smaller models of this famous Australian dinosaur. These include:
- Baby Muttaburrasaurus dinosaur sleeping (3m long climb and play sculpture)
- Adolescent Medium Muttaburrasaurus (2.2m high)
- Muttaburrasaurus Head & Neck Wall decor
- Gondwana Rainforest Sanctuary (animated Muttaburrasaurus head & neck with eggs)
- Giant life-sized Muttaburrasaurus dinosaur sculpture (custom-built for the town of Muttaburra)
- Muttaburrasaurus Definitive (scaled-down version)
Did you know…
- After years of study, it became clear that it was related to a group of dinosaurs previously found in the northern hemisphere called “iguanodontids”.
- Muttaburrasaurus seems to have grown to about 7 metres long and 35 metres high.
- It was able to stand upright on its rear legs but would have spent much of its time browsing on vegetation on all fours.
- It is an ornithischian (bird-hipped) dinosaur. Its most distinctive feature is an inflated hollow bony roof above the snout in front of its eyes.
- The original skeleton was found in rocks that formed in a marine environment about 105–103 million years ago, which reflects the fact that shallow seas covered much of eastern Australia at this time.
