A link to our past- Natureworks has been involved in numerous public education and cultural projects, which we have developed with a unique sensitivity to the cultural issues dealt with ensuring authenticity in communication and presentation of the diverse concepts to be expressed.

This Giant Bizarre Dugong structure and is situated in Rockhampton on the lands that are now protected by the local indigenous Mutawintii people.

This enormous sculpture houses an insight into the facets of Aboriginal and Torres’s strait culture, highlighting the rich Indigenous Australian heritage and evidence of past traditions are revealed in educational displays. Visitors can be entertained by rock engravings, paintings, an internal amphitheatre that displays educational insight into Aboriginal cultures such as their main source of food and medicine, recreational activities, ceremonial rituals and spiritual beliefs are associated within the context of their dreaming stories which are still passed on today.

The Giant Dugong is 22m long, 5m, high and 12m wide and has been made by Natureworks team of sculptors, carpenters, builders. It is made from a combination of fibreglass and concrete over a steel frame. You can see photos of the building of this magnificent unique sea life creature.

The coastal indigenous tribes regarded the dugong with a very high economic and social value as it provided a rare and nutritious source of meat. Throughout times in history, the dugong has been a popular mythological animal. We agree that is a beautifully unique creature of the seas and resembles a walrus, whale, but its closest relative is the elephant.
