Columnar Jointing Formations

Many children in today’s world grow up as “lounge lizards” without the basic motor skills required to deal easily with the great outdoors.

We are developing three modular interlocking stepping stone modules with varying average heights up to 1.0 metre high which will encourage toddlers to take that first step into the natural world.

The version shown is indicative only of previous sculpts. The new version will incorporate all relevant safety considerations and Australian standards. Request a quote or contact us for more information.

Columnar Jointing Formations – Artificial Rocks

Columnar Jointing formations are natural occurring rock constructions. They are usually created naturally by volcanic activity approximately 60 million years ago.The structure of Columnar jointing is commonly hexagonal columns in shape and are separated by joints or fractures in the rock. These columnar jointing can be seen in various places around the world and are a joy to observe. The perfectly geometric columns of rock can be described as magical. The formation of columns is enhanced by water – where water cooling has played a significant role, often when lava flows are ponded in rivers valleys and are cooled by river water flowing over them.

Columnar jointing rocks can vary from 3 metres to a few centimetres in diameter and can be as much as 30 metres tall. They are typically parallel and straight but can also be curved and vary in diameter. A truly magical sight when seen in mass.

Natureworks has recreated this natural wonder for various projects such as Bankstown sports club, Club Tropical Port Douglas, pacific lagoon waterfall, and various playgrounds and interpretive centres. Natureworks can replicate the natural beauty of basalt columnar jointing in various mediums depending on the purpose of the finished structure. For use in playground theming, we can replicate the look of basalt columnar jointing with synthetic concrete and it will create a hardscape solid form that will be long-wearing and create a variety of climbing levels for all age groups.
