Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus)
- Platypuses and (or platypodes) grow up to 60cm in length and are endemic to east and south-eastern Australia, including Tasmania.
- They are mostly, nocturnal sleeping in chambers at the end of riverbank burrows.
- Celebrated as one of Australia’s most unusual mammals and one of only two monotremes in the world. The other is the echidna, as an egg-laying mammal that suckles its young.
- One of the very few venomous mammals in the world – the male has a poisonous spur on the rear legs.
- They use electro-reception to locate their prey – mostly invertebrates, including tadpoles, worms, snails and shrimps.
- The duck-like bill is flexible and feels like suede.
- Prehistoric platypuses grew much larger and the fossil record includes animals up to 1 metre in length.
The Playful & Educational Platypus Adventure!
Did you know there’s a creature so unusual, so quirky, that early scientists thought it was a practical joke? Meet the incredible Australian platypus—a furry, web-footed, egg-laying mammal with a duckbill and a playful spirit that has fascinated generations!
At Natureworks, we celebrate this iconic Aussie with sculptures designed to spark curiosity and joy. Imagine a platypus slide where children giggle as they glide down its tail, or a magnificent 2-metre-long platypus climbing structure encouraging adventurous play and discovery. Each piece captures the platypus’s whimsical nature, making it perfect for councils looking to enrich public parks and wildlife parks eager to enhance visitor experiences.
But beneath its playful exterior lies vulnerability—the platypus is increasingly threatened by habitat loss and climate change. Our sculptures not only delight but also educate, reminding visitors about the importance of protecting this unique Australian treasure.
