It plumage is mostly scarlet, but the rump and tail covert feathers are light blue and the greater upper wing converts are yellow.

Formerly this macaw ranged north to southern Tamaulipas, It can still be found on the island of Coiba- (largest island in central America) and is the national bird of Honduras.
